Introduction and History
YB&N is a group interested in the natural history of Lincoln County. Our interests include observing and learning about animals, plants, and skywatching. Our focus has been on birdwatching because birds are easy to observe and there are many good field guides to help in identifying them. YB&N is not affiliated with any other organization.
Yaquina Birders & Naturalists (YB&N) is a tax-exempt, nonprofit, unincorporated association (Constitution and Bylaws). Donations are not tax-deductible.
Some of the history of Yaquina Birders & Naturalists is included in "History of 1968-1994 Lincoln County Bird Groups," starting on p. 354 in Background of the Birds of Lincoln County Project, and Recommendations for Others Planning Similar Projects by R. D. Bayer. 1995. Journal of Oregon Ornithology 4:353-394.
Activities and Projects
From September through June, we usually have a meeting on the 3rd Thursday of the month and a field trip in Lincoln County on the Saturday following the meeting. The meeting is at the Meeting Room of OSU Extension Lincoln County, 1211 SE Bay Blvd, Newport, OR. In December, we may not have a field trip, but urge members to participate in the Yaquina Bay Christmas Bird Count.
YB&N could do more activities if there are more volunteers to do the activities.
YB&N has emphasized not only observing birds and nature, but also the reporting and sharing of natural history observations. For example, YB&N activities have included:
- From October 1980 through 2015, we published a paper and/or PDF newsletter (the Sandpiper). Although there were some years in which the Sandpiper was published each month, it was mostly published at the end of the month from August through May. Besides announcements pertinent to Lincoln County, the Sandpiper then published columns with bird observations for Lincoln County and often with other observational notes about natural history in Lincoln County. Since 2015, there has not been a volunteer to write bird and other nature notes, and the Sandpiper is an email. A hardbound copy of the paper Sandpiper is on file at Guin Library of OSU Libraries (Stacks QL671.S261).
- Starting in the August 1984 Sandpiper and continuing through 2015, we requested observations of mass flights of dragonflies flying in one direction (migration ?), usually south. Some of the results are available at nature.htm#dragonflies. Some results were also given in "September 1997 Directed Flights of Dragonflies, A Preliminary Report" on the Pacific Northwest Dragonfly Migration Project web page(http://www.ent.orst.edu/ore_dfly/migrate.htm) that is no longer available, but it is available through a link at the Internet Archive Wayback Machine, where Terry Morse found it there on 24 August 2010 (http://web.archive.org/web/20071222000203/http://www.ent.orst.edu/ore_dfly/migrate.htm). Scroll around the page to see more information about the now defunct "Pacific Northwest Dragonfly Migration Project."
- From June 1992 through 2015, the Semimonthly Bird Checklists Project was included in our newsletter, with forms for people to fill out with bird sightings at sites of their choice, if they wished.
- In December 1995, YB&N contributed to the purchase of the 80 acre Wetland Conservancy's Estella Matilda Happ Preserve at Beaver Creek.
- Starting in 2003, members have helped during spring field trips at Yaquina Bay for elementary school students during USFWS's Shorebirds: Migratory Superheroes! Program (formerly known as Shorebird Sister Schools.
- In 2006, YB&N was a sponsor of the Oregon Coast Birding Trail through monetary contributions and researching of Lincoln County site guides.
- During 2007 through 2014, YB&N was a project partner for the International Brant Monitoring Project by sharing our observations of Brant in Lincoln County.
- In December 2007, YB&N purchased, mostly with donations, Cornell Lab of Ornithology's BirdSleuth curriculum and two pair of binoculars for P. J. Collson's 7th Grade class in Newport.
- Starting in 2011, YB&N provided some financial support to the Yaquina Bay Christmas Bird Count.
